Can I Be Less Enthused For The Presidential Election?
Or, I'd welcome a Giant Douche vs. Turd Sandwich at this point.
In 2004, about a month ahead of the U.S. Presidential election, South Park aired an episode titled, “Douche And Turd.”
Like many episodes, this one used an absurd premise — an election to choose a new school mascot, with the only choices being a giant douche or a turd sandwich — to illustrate the real-life lack of a likeable candidate in the Presidential election.
Now, George W. Bush and John Kerry had their flaws, and it is hard to know exactly who was the turd and who was the douche, but I can imagine a lot of people who would gladly take that election over what we have been subjected to in recent years.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis made his inevitable bid for the Presidency official this week, as former President Donald Trump remains a popular candidate. Sure there are other, maybe even some decent Republicans in the mix, but rational, common-sense-using folks, don't make for good television, so I wouldn't know.
The Democrats are sticking with President Biden, and while I do respect him as a human and acknowledge his work as a long-time public servant, I don't think I am ageist in saying an 80-year-old is probably too old to be President.
Sure we got Marianne Williamson, who, despite her “woo-woo” ways does have some good ideas, and RFK Jr., who will try to get by on his name, despite pushing antivaxx conspiracy theories, but they don't really stand a chance.
I will spare you my thoughts about whom I am supporting. This post is not meant to be taken too seriously, but I know for many people, especially those whose rights hang by a thread, politics is life or death.
In the end, I understand I may have to suck it up and vote for someone I don't support because that's the best choice for the country.
But, I don't have to like it, and I can still hope for a candidate who inspires, and isn't just a marginally better alternative to someone worse.
Of course, I am also a New Yorker, so my vote, much like those of the students of “South Park Elementary” doesn't matter much anyway.
